recompensa pentru fidelitate

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

New technology from Tamron - Vibration Compensation (VC)

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Tamron VC technologyTamron released their version of Canon’s IS only that this stabilization method now works on all 3 axes. You can see more details about Tamron’s Vibration Compensation technology and also try out the lens virtually. Pretty cool! This is a Tamron AF 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC lens working on all Canon EOS range of cameras. The wow factor is mainly because of the large focal range and price. Maybe Tamron should work more on the price - as in Romania, the lens will be available with  aprox. 1o0 euros less than the Canon version. Of course, you will also get an extra 28-70 focal range which is something to take into consideration when you want to cover the biggest range without spending too much. Here’s the price and specifications comparison [ro]:

Do you have experience with Tamron lenses ? Are they as fast as a Canon lense with USM?

Gmail 2.0 - IMAP & other sexy stuff

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

gmail logoI just received the “Google Friends Newsletter” and there are some pretty exciting news. First of all we will be able to use Gmail with the IMAP protocol - this means better sync on all computers and devices you use to access Gmail. An extra bonus - that I find very useful is that this feature is also enabled on Gmail working on your own domain - Google Apps. I’ve been using Google Apps on my domains and I am also recomending their service to all my clients. Can’t wait to have the Gmail Mobile (link works only if you access it from you mobile device) java application available for Google Apps! (do you hear me Google?)

Here’s the exact excerpt from the newsletter:

You now have the ability to use the IMAP protocol for Gmail (including Google Apps) free of charge. Unlike the POP protocol, IMAP enables you to keep your inbox synced across all devices, so that whatever you do in your email — whether on your phone, desktop mail client, or web browser — shows up everywhere you access your email. Reading, sending, deleting and other actions you take on your messages are reflected automatically and instantaneously any place you get Gmail.

There are also some other rumors about an enhanced version of Gmail - Gmail 2.0 that comes with optimized java-script back end rewrite. Screenshots and other info on Google Blogoscoped.

My new lens…

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Canon EF-S 17-40…is here! I finally got rid of that kit lens (Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6) and got myself a really professional lens: Canon EF17-40mm f4.0 L USM. Here’s nice review of this lens. Most people say it’s a “must-have” lens and I am pretty sure I will agree with them, once i get the time to test this baby. One thing is certain - my camera (Canon 30D + battery grip) looks and feels (the lens weights 475g) completely different with this colossus lens (colossus compared to the kit lens). I like ! Sexy times!

Career move, MPI, peopleware

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

OPNAfter spending more than 3 years (since Sept 04) in Oracle, acting as Senior Web Specialist in the EMEA OPN Web Admin Team and dealing with the administration of Oracle PartnerNetwork portal & eMarketing campaigns, more and more signs that my journey with Oracle was reaching it’s end, started to show.

Don’t want to say something that I would regret later on, but the possibilities to develop my career further in Oracle where extremely limited and the worse part is that I was becoming a lazy corporate boy, learning nothing new and doing nothing merely exciting. As my manager said in a recent email, regarding my departure “No hard feelings on the fact you leave, I actually think that it’s a fair option for everyone as we would not be able to meet your expectations and vice-versa!”, things were not longer working for me. That “vice-versa!” part was a bit mean, but justified by my lack of involvement and motivation during the last months and also by his poor management skills.

I am not being ungreatful, I learned tons of things @Oracle and I got the chance of participating at some pretty exciting stuff. Being responsable for a high trafic portal, for the entire EMEA region and being part in meetings with senior Oracle EMEA management were surely experiences that I will benefit from in the future. Coaching new colleagues and helping them become autonomous was also very challenging. I also met some extraordinary people which I am proud to call my friends - hopefully they will drop by and read my blog from time to time.

Moving on to the next step, I am eager to join, starting November 1st, a team of great professionals, Media Pro Interactiv, managed by one of the pioneers of the online advertising industry in Romania, Orlando Nicoara. I don’t know exactly what my job role will be, nor if I am allowed to disclose these kinds of information (it involves some development plans of MPI), but I am more than excited about the people I already met and the new learning curve I might benefit from. Also, the recruitment process, was nothing like the ones I was familiar with. Corporate world definetly has an impact on you, and after 3 years you live to think that the corporate way is the only way. Well, it is not, and the process that made me “sign” with MPI was not at all corporate. If you indulge me this exercise of modesty, it was more of a head-hunting, rather that the standard interview, only that it was “provoked” by me. Anyway, it’s pointless talking about a job that I didn’t even start and I am pretty sure this is not what my blog is about.

One of the signs, I mentioned earlier, came during the interviews, in the form of a prize. I won the Peopleware book in the contest that Jobber started (thanks Filip!), to help spread the word about their really cool site and product. I believe this book will prove to be very helpful in the new challenge that I was offered the opportunity to take.

Jobber is running a IT job board focused on developers, designers, etc and they recently decided to offer their product as an open-source platform. I am pretty sure that it will have a great success and it’s certainly the platform I would use for helping the HR department of a SME company that does not have a good & stable online recruitment system put in place. Please check out Jobber Development Network if you are interested in the product. You might as well put the jobs widget on your site/blog and participate in the monthly drawings. Filip is offering some pretty cool books. I am fan of Jobber and not only because it’s a Romanian product, but it’s also a great tool.

Later edit: A small mistake in the part about jobber. The open-source platform for Jobber can be found @ jobberbase.com. JDN is something else, even more exciting! Check it out and don’t miss the launch!

Stay tuned! :)

Did you ever take a photo of your ghost?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Last night, my wife wanted to learn photography. Unfortunately I am not the pro I would like to be so teaching was limited to the camera’s basic settings , but we went in the old part of Bucharest and took some pretty interesting shots, including some very lucky shots:

The images below where shot on a tripod with 6s exposure and flash. We posed for only 1-2s and than ran out of the scene. The flash managed to freeze the most lighted parts of us (faces and hands). The rest is transparent… pretty neat? no? Also, these photos were not edited in any way. They are just what came out of the camera.

Later edit: My lucky shots above can also be considered as an easy technique to produce some Halloween ghost images. Thanks Ionut, or should I say “colega”? :)

Concursul “Fotografia ta” by National Georgaphic - “Periferii Urbane”

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Votati aici!

Teatrul de Comedie Teatrul de Comedie

Descriere: Ruinele unei capitale Europene.

Votati aici!

New house for Webmyc Blog

Webmyc Blog
Hi folks,

My blog has the same URL, but I finally manage to settle on a new theme/design for my updated blog. I’m using a theme from Dezinerfolio on a fresh install of wordpress as my old blog was to crowded with mods and plugins and was to damn time consuming to update it.I am not a fan o changing designs monthly and this is why it took so long until i settled on the current design. I feel this design better represents who I am and what I do. On this blog you will get new posts more frequently, more business related articles, more photography and …the new “Romanian posts” category that I’ve just decided to start…

All in all, if you were one of my “many” (LOL) readers, I hope you will enjoy the new Webmyc Blog and come here more often. Don’t forget to bring your friends!
