Google Talk has a cool new feature - translation bots - you can add them to your contact list and then just chat with them in your native language and they will reply back almost instantly with a pretty close translation (in the language of your chosen bot) of what you wrote. You can see a simple test on the right. The translation is not 100% accurate but hey …it’s pretty good!
So, if you want a translation buddy that will help you instantly with communication gaps between english and german speakers, just add en2de@bot.talk.google.com to your contact list in Google Talk. Currently there are 24 translation bots: ar2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, en2zh, es2en, fr2de, fr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, zh2en. Don’t forget to add the @bot.talk.google.com part at the end.
The really use of this feature will be handy also on you blackberry, if you use the Google Talk client for BlackBerry. With this you can transform you blackberry into a mobile translator!

Scientists from EniTech Research Labs have come up with a remarkable device (The Gardner device) - a camera that apparently is able to capture images from the future. I shit you not. This device does work like a regular camera but instead of using light to generate the photograph (= writing with light) they use tachyon particles - which are faster then light. At first I thought that this is just another spoof but reading through their website and watching pictures taken with this device leads me to think that this could be the breakthrough of our century. Here’s a small excerpt from they FAQ - which i hope will make things a little clearer:
Q: What is the Gardner Project? A: The Gardner Project is an effort to develop a device that processes imagery based on faster-than-light particles (tachyon particles). Unlike a camera which processes light, thus depicting the present, this device should theoretically detect the particles originating from a point in time farther ahead than the present. Since faster than light particles move backward in time the particle imagery that is developed should theoretically depict what we would call “future” time.
Q: But how can you see into time that different than the one we exist in? Isn’t that impossible?
A: Well actually no. In fact you probably already own a camera that can photograph the past. It’s so trivial we take it for granted. Simply walk outside and take a picture of the night sky. The stars you’re seeing are thousands of years in the past. In fact some of the stars you’re watching don’t even exist anymore and have long since died yet the light continues to take its long journey across the universe on toward our world. If someone on a distant planet (but still in the same galaxy) were watching Earth through a telescope right now, they would see perhaps the early Mesopotamians struggling to rise into civilization or the collapse of the Roman empire but not our current time.
Our device is based on a series of carefully calibrated predictions that the particles we detect should be exactly 1,191 days ahead of the time that the image is processed. We have been unable to date to adjust that amount or look farther ahead than that. And the device cannot look into the past since tachyon particles only move backwards, never forward. A good simple example is like this: [Us] <—[tachyon particles]—— [future time]
and here are some example images taken with a normal digital camera and their special device. Attention - both images from each set where taken at the same time. The 3rd set is the most mind blowing - it shows an empty land and then the 2nd image shows a massive construction.

Maine Azi este probabil pentru multi dintre noi prima zi de lucru din 2008. Pentru mine sigur este. Incep acest an extrem de motivat, cu multe lucruri incitante in perspectiva apropiata si cu foarte multe promisiuni personale. Dupa o vacanta mult mai lunga decat in alti ani si un pic cam prea multe sticle goale, sunt ferm convins ca noul an va fi unul dintre cele mai bune de pana acum, daca nu chiar cel mai bun. Si nu, nu cred ca e de la sticlele goale si nici de la continutul lor. :)
Nu sunt adeptul “new year’s resolutions” si nici al lucrurilor incepute de la 1 ianuarie dar ceva ma face sa cred ca multe lucruri se vor schimba anul asta in plan profesional dar si personal. Intotdeauna mi-a placut sa imi inchipui cum vor fi lucrurile dupa un anumit milestone si sunt fascinat de modul in care gasim resurse sa ne motivam pentru niste chestii care ni se par “the ultimate milestone”, pentru ca apoi, dupa ce trecem cu brio de ele, sa ne gandim si sa ne motivam sa le trecem pe urmatoarele. Va mai amintiti cum ne gandeam la bacalaureat si la admiterea la facultate? Mie unul mi se parea ca daca trec de astea 2 hopuri, the sky is the fucking limit. Imi faceam planuri despre cum o sa urc pe munte si o sa fac un foc de tabara cu toate cartile din liceu si cum nu o sa mai imi pese de nimic. Sau despre ziua cand va veni timpul sa intemeiem o familie….wawaweewaa ….asta era chiar tare. You get the point….
Ca sa revin la ce spuneam, anul asta, mai mult ca in alti ani, am o imagine destul de clara despre cum o sa arate viata mea la sfarsitul anului ce de abia incepe. Si am toate motivele sa fiu bucuros. Ma consider un tip extrem de norocos iar pana acum toate imaginile pe care le-am avut despre viitorul meu mai clare sau mai putin clare, s-au transpuns in realitate. Sunt norocos pentru ca stiu ce vreau, pentru ca am langa mine o fata care ma intelege si care ma iubeste, pentru ca avem puterea de a ne face planuri pe termene oricat de lungi sau scurte. Nu, n-am fumat nimic …dar chiar sunt HIGH …HIGH on life !

Au fost persoane care m-au contactat si mi-au spus ca nu au incredere in povestea asta. Argumentul era ca oricine ar putea scrie o poveste lacrimogena si sa dea numarul unui cont unde sa se stranga niste banuti. Foarte adevarat, nu am cum sa va demonstrez autenticitatea acestui caz decat punandu-va in legatura directa cu Ionut (adresa de email si telefon). However, incercand sa inteleg ce este in sufeltul acestui baiat, nu stiu daca ar fi foarte dornic sa vorbeasca cu toata lumea individual si sa le spuna povestea lui, care imi inchipui ca nu e deloc usor de povestit. Orice sugestii aveti pentru acest caz si modul in care il putem gestiona, sunt binevenite.
Pana atunci, voi continua sa postez extrasele de cont si ii voi inmana personal banii lui Ionut - ne vom sfatui si vom vedea ce e mai presant - taxe la scoala, imbracaminte, plata intretinerii si a facturilor pentru utilitati, etc. Voi incerca sa postez cat de curand si orarul partial al lui Ionut de la liceu astfel incat sa vedem daca si cat timp ar avea pentru un eventual job - fie sa lucreze online de acasa, fie chiar un part-time de seara, undeva.

Even later edit: restanta lui Ionut la intretinere depaseste 700 ron dar in bloc sunt persoane cu restante de peste 10.000 ron iar apa calda nu mai au din aprilie. Sper sa strangem suficienti bani sa ii platim intretinerea si eventual sa ii luam un incalzitor instant pentru dus. Totusi sunt constient ca acest ajutor nu poate veni tot timpul de aceea tot insist la Ionut sa se gandeasca serios la un job part time.

My story is really simple – I am a 26y old guy from Bucharest, Romania.My name is Mihai Victor – where “Mihai” is the Romanian “Michael” and my folks also named me Victor, coming from victory – the victory that my mother & myself survived a terrible car accident, when she was pregnant with me. Why all this boring info about my name? Well – it’s easy – nobody calls me neither Mihai nor Victor. They all call me BOB. This is the nickname my father gave me when I was just a baby boy. Bob is not at all a Romanian name and I wondered many years why did he chose such a name, a name that people in Romania usually use to name their pet dogs.
My father is 1 year younger than you, born on January 3rd 1942 and he is a huge fan of yours.Unfortunately he is no longer a living fan of yours. He passed away in September 1994. My father’s life was all about mathematics, music and freedom. He is one of those parents who’s lifetime achievements are extremely hard to follow by his children. Thanks to him, I learned even since my early years, to love people like you, Mick Jagger, Pete Townshend, John Lennon, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash and many more. I also learned that my nickname’s godfather is you, Mr. Bob Dylan. He loved you so much that when he heard the news that he is going to be the father of a baby boy, he could not resist calling him Bob. Communism and the era Romania was going through in 1981 when I was born, prevented my parents to give me a non Romanian name – and this is why Bob is just a nickname – a nickname that I’ve been carrying around for 26 years and shared with all my friends, loved ones, school colleagues and work mates. Dad spoke dearly of you and he was very familiar with your work, just as if you were his bigger brother. He knew all you were up to and he sang me your best works.
2007 passed by and one was one of my best years. The only regret that I have about last year was that I could not make it as a spectator at your series of concerts you held throughout Europe. I especially wanted to join you in Amsterdam, on April 8th and 9th.
I hope I’ll get to give you a big hug in this lifetime, and if not, I am sure we’ll get the chance in the next one or so. Perhaps I will be able to join your Never Ending Tour in the States or maybe there are chances you will repeat the European tour. Anyway – I wanted to wish you a fabulous 2008, and may you be surrounded only by people that love you and that you love. I’m guessing it’s not easy at all to be as active as you still are and to carry the responsibility of transmitting the message of the generations whose voice you still are.
