BlackBerry 8800, GPS and Google Maps

BlackBerry 8800Since Friday, I am a BlackBerry user. I decided to go this way as Windows Mobile stability was pretty challenging when combining internet, email, messenger and regular phone usage. I am very happy with my BlackBerry 8800 and I have to tell you that this device is amazing – it hasfrig native support for GTalk and Yahoo Messenger, automatic configuration for my gmail and webmyc email accounts (webmyc has Google Aps) and probably soon, support for my corporate email account. The device works lightning fast and never had to reset it because it hooked up on some applications, like a Windows Mobile device would probably do.

A nice feature is also the integrated GPS, but I was a bit suspicious if it would prove to be useful, as I was told that I am stuck with the BlackBerry Maps application that is not quite relevant for Romania, at least. This, until 2 hours ago, when I discovered that the mobile version of Google Maps has GPS support and can locate you on the map in no time. That being said, give it a spin – you won’t be disappointed – the accuracy is amazing. However, I will not use it as much as i would want to, as the roaming costs for data traffic are not very low.

Good job Google! I think this is the future – no more carrying around large storage memory cards to host GPS navigation software that cost more than half the price of the device. Mobile Google Maps is free and it has global coverage + satellite maps + many more features such as traffic information, locations (restaurants, hotels, museums, etc)

Boss, if you will see some roaming charges on my phone bill, it is because I could not find the way to the conference and I had to use my GPS enabled BlackBerry to get there. :)

Internet CEE and insomnia

Internet CEE logoIt’s 1:45AM and I cannot sleep. At 6AM my flight for Warsaw, Poland leaves. I am attending Internet CEE, the first international conference on the Interned industry in Central and Eastern Europe. Considering that I must leave my house at 4:00 AM, I am thinking there is no point in trying to get some sleep as I have troubles getting up in 1h. I’ll just switch from Heineken to Red Bull, take my shower, and catch some sleep in the plane, that is if the wind/cold/fog will not prevent it from taking off.

Last time I was on a plane (September 07) I was just after catching a terrible cold in Oslo, a cold that brought back the sinusitis I suffered from in my teen years. That cold, together with my sinuses vulnerability and combined with the high altitude (I was in the plane) gave me the most incredible head/nose/face aches. I hope not to get those pains today.

I am very excited to participate at Internet CEE and I hope I will come back with some useful information and a good grasp of international trends in the Internet industry.  Also, I will try to do some live blogging from the conference, so if the topic interests you, stay tuned Tuesday and Wednesday. Also, never been to Warsaw before and I am looking forward in take some nice photos of the old town and having a local beer or two.

Synced my iPod and BlackBerry, charged my camera batteries and packed my luggage. What else to do?

Lansare carte “New Media” – post event

A fost interesant. Fiecare invitat a impartasit cateceva din experienta personala de online.

Am remarcat, spre rusinea mea, ca autoarea cartii, Dorina Guţu este profa mea de la SNSPA – ne-am intalnit si sambata cand eu am dat una dintrele cele doua restante care mai stau intre mine si diploma de licenta – joi se afiseaza notele – poate mediul online ma ajuta sa obtin o nota de trecere – se aude dna Guţu ? :)

Vlad Stan a facut un apel offline catre toti bloggeri – haideti sa promovam aceasta carte – in mediul online. Stau si ma intreb, din moment ce cartea se adreseaza in primul rand celor care nu au avut tangente prea mari cu mediul online – se vrea a fi un instrument de “educare” a acestora – oare cat va ajuta o promovare in mediul online ?

Am mai observat ca Orlando a fost singurul pe care microfonul l-a respectat si caruia nu i-a facut probleme tehnice (bine Chief!!)

eCostin a vorbit foarte frumos si chiar in versuri – “internetul ar fi mult mai sarac, fara un Novac…” – si datorita lui avem si urmatorul montaj de la lansare:

uitati si cateva poze:

si nu uitati sa cumparati cartea: “puteti cumpara cartea de pe siteul dol.ro sau de pe siteul editurii Tritonic” – costa 20 ron.

Lansare carte “New Media”

Astazi, la orele 18:30, va avea loc in cafeneaua Festival 39, lansarea cartii “New Media”.

La eveniment au fost invitati sa vorbeasca cativa dintre greii online-ului de pe la noi si se pare ca unii dintre ei nu vor mai vorbi prea des in public. So, dc vreti sa ii vedeti pe Orlando Nicoara (Director General MediaPro Interactiv), Vlad Stan (Managing Director Vodanet), Radu Sitaru (Director adjunct Netbridge Development), Sorin Tudor (Managing Director Project 365 Communication) dar si pe subsemnatu agitandu-se sa faca una-doua poze, bagati mare si terminati treaba ca sa puteti pleca in timp util de la job ;)

E bine ca apar astfel de publicatii, dar oare sunt ele credibile?

Am I still working for Oracle?

One Oracle evangelist that we had the pleasure to meet in a training 2 years ago told us a story from the past, when Oracle employees had individual accounts for everything: email, internal applications, HR (paycheck, training) and so on. A friend of his left Oracle and they canceled all his accounts except the paycheck one. That dude received his monthly paycheck for another 1,5 years.

I was just checking my status, and I noticed that i still have a working email address @oracle.com. I wonder, will I receive my paycheck for November. That would be sooooooo cool.

Here’s the autoreply I’ve set for my Oracle account:

Dear sender,

Thanks for your email.

I am no longer working for Oracle since November 1st. If you receive this, Global IT did not cancel my account yet.

Please direct your requests to my ex-manager, [name and email]

Best Blog Design – another cool Romanian initiative

bbd.gifBest Blog Design is a a competition who’s main purpose is to identify cool Romanian blog designs. You can submit your entry in one of the 2 categories – original themes or modified themes. I submitted my blog and it got accepted, but I am not really proud of this, as my theme modifications are pretty scarce, just a logo and some css. Anyway, the point is the build a resource with the best looking wordpress themes used in the Romanian blogosphere. Congratulations Cristian, for another great initiative.

what business smarphone would you choose?

I am looking at some options and I would like to know your opinion. What device from the 3 below, would you prefer ?

I’ve been a Nokia user since ages and the switch is not easy – but I need something to better organize my time, something with high speed internet, eventually touchscreen, something fast (good hardware, easy to use, qwerty keyboard – i hate writing text on numeric keyboard). GPS would be very helpfull and also nice, stable software for instant messaging (gTalk and Yahoo! Messenger), etc. For the moment, I’ve got in testing a HTC TyTN II – seems pretty cool, but Windows Mobile (even 6.0) is not that great. I would love to try out the others.

What would you choose?

Later edit: I got the BB8800 ! :) I just could not cope with the idea to have windows on my phone as well .

happy people

I was participating in the 1st meeting with my new colleagues when something really surprising happened. A dude came in with a huge bouquet of roses, he made his way through and finally landed on his knees next to a colleague of mine and proposed to her – with engagement ring and everything. She said YES! Everybody cheered and the meeting was much more fun than before. I wonder, are all the meetings like this? Congratulations Florentina!

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a team dedicated to organizing surprises during meetings ?
