400+ comments for a blank post

Techcrunch did it again. Following Twitter‘s lack of availability during the last days, Michael Arrington posted a blank post that made over 400 comments in 2 days. Probably it will be one of the most popular posts of Techrunch all time. Just check some of the hillarious video comments :)

This is somewhat similar to Bobby Voicu’s confirmation that he’s got the job as Romania Yahoo! Community Manager. Posts with no content but that convey a lot of insight.

And since we talked about Twitter, feel free to follow me in those moments of service availability ;)

Fun has begun on the market – HTTPool & Yahoo.ro

HTTPool enters Romanian market as a full service online advertising network, following the market trends by bringing a combined approach to the Online Industry – full service agency & online advertising network. You can read the full story on Hotnews and a more detailed analysis on Doru Panaitescu’s blog. I met HTTPool’s CEO, Timotej, in Warsaw at the InternetCEE conference last november and he is a fun guy with a sound business focus and clear regional markets understanding. I was impressed that such a young guy can lead such a big operation, but I guess this is the way in the Online Industry. It’s funny that neither of the sources that bring us the news mention anything about Timotej.

Timotej Gala, Chief Executive at Httpool Internet Marketing Central and Eastern Europe (Balkan).

Timotej Gala is responsible for media-buying and Internet advertising operations in five CEE markets. Since 2003, when he joined the company, he has successfully positioned Httpool as the market leader in online marketing in South-East Europe. Furthermore, he actively promotes Internet marketing in the region presenting the latest trends and opportunities of online marketing through media and marketing events.

The other news comes from Bobby Voicu – romanian blogger & online evangelist – recently appointed Yahoo Romania Community Manager. Bobby had a very important guest on his online RadioLynx show – Darren Patterson, Yahoo Business Development Director for Emerging Markets, who announced Yahoo’s strategy for 2008&2009 in Romania. Apparently www.yahoo.ro will be online with localized content this fall (august-september). You can see the full story on ZF.

Also, Yahoo! Messenger, no1 social “network” in Romania (if you ask me), will have a localized (translated) version.

This will definitely be a fun year for the Online Industry in Romania ;)

Later edit: quite a coincidence, Orlando posted a write-up about the same 2 events I mentioned above. Check the timestamps ;)

Later edit 2: You can listen to the recording of Bobby Voicu interviewing Darren Patterson

Free access to Britannica for web publishers

Congratulations: as a Web publisher you’ve been approved for complimentary access to Britannica Online. This message contains the information you’ll need to sign up for your free one-year subscription to our Web site, which includes the entire Encyclopædia Britannica as well as many other sources of information and rich multimedia.

As you can see, Britannica Encyclopedia offers free access to bloggers, web publishers, etc.
You can also embed content on your website. I  think this will be some great news for my colleagues at www.descopera.ro.

Here’s some information about our future doggie – Chewbacka ;)

Full story on TechCrunch.

Later edit: the embedding does not work as expected. Apparently you cannot embed a specific article, but only topics. For example, I wanted to display an article about Golden Retrievers above, but i just got a general Dogs widget. Bummer!

PicLens – must have browser add-on for photo enthusiasts

piclens-webmycI just came across this great browser add-on via Google Operating System.

PicLens is compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari and enables you to browse full-screen through the pictures from a website, in 3D!

It will enhance your Flickr/Picasa (and many more – see bellow) browsing experience into an interactive full-screen slide show that enables you to quickly find the picture you are looking for and go to that picture’s page. You can see on the right how my HDR Flickr Set looks when using PicLens.

Our new interactive "3D Wall" lets you effortlessly drag, click, and zoom your way around a wall of pictures for an extraordinary, full-screen viewing experience. Why mundanely flip through online photo galleries or squint at thumbnails from Google Image Search when you can fly through an immersive, full-screen experience instead?

Here’s a list of the sites fully supported by PicLens. Theoretically the add-on should work on any pictures site that is structured in such a way that can be understood by PicLens.

Photo Sites Social Networking Image Search Webhosts/Galleries

Photobucket
Picasa Web Albums
Fotki
FotoTime
deviantART
Smugmug
Facebook

OpenSocial Foundation – everybody is in!

opensocialYahoo announced today that they will join OpenSocial and that’s not all, they are forming, together with Google and MySpace a new non-profit foundation – the OpenSocial Foundation, following the model of OpenID Foundation. The reason behind this is of course to be fully neutral but still get everybody involved in this project, at full throttle.

The funny part is that opensocial.org gets redirected to a page made with Google Sites, a product of Google Aps :)

A big surprise comes from Apache – they released an "incubator project for OpenSocial and gadgets" called Shindig.

I find all this fuss extremely interesting for the web industry – including advertisers, strategists, developers and designers. Stay tuned for more "global" surprises.

Animoto – create on the fly videos, online

493v1-max-150x150 As open platforms rampantly grow we will see more and more startups that offer services like Animoto. As covered by TechCrunch, Animoto enables you to create on the fly  videos from your photos. Here are some of Animoto’s really cool features:

  • it allows you to retrieve photos from popular sites like: Flickr, Facebook, Smugmug, Picasa, Photobucket or upload from your station
  • you can add a music soundtrack to your video – either from their database or upload your mp3
  • they support newly launched YouTube Everywhere API, thus allowing you to automatically upload your creation to YoutTube
  • you can create 30′ free videos or even longer videos at a small cost of $3 or $30 for unlimited yearly subscription
  • they have a Facebook application which allows you to use Animoto from inside your Facebook account.
  • you can embed the videos directly from Animoto or just use YouTube (see above)

Here’s a video made from my HDR set from Flickr. In case your were wondering the music is from Juno Soundrack.

Webmyc is nofollow free: linklove baby!

Me and some Playboy bunniesSomething I wanted to do a long time, but was to lazy to do it – is now made easy by NoFollow Free plugin for WordPress:

NoFollow Free removes the “nofollow” attribute from your wordpress blog’s comments (precisely from the author’s links) and/or from the comments text links and it inserts (if you want) an image band at the top of your pages with the phrase: “NOFOLLOW FREE”.

Currently you have to comment twice on Webmyc’s Blog in order for you to get the attribute nofollow removed from your URL. Please don’t abuse, although I would be very happy to see you guys comment as often as you want – after all this is one of the main ideas of blogging, right?

This is one of my 1st baby steps toward my readers, if any :)

LATER EDIT: I’ve also installed the CommentLuv plugin which displays your latest blog entry, right after your comment. Thanks eCostin for the inspiration. Let’s keep them comments coming ! :)
