Keep up the enthusiasm
Aug 20th
I saw the job request ad below and I remembered that I had a rough week trying to prepare my most important pitch so far. It was for the job interview at MPI and I had to do a market analysis on a segment and then based on it to propose a new business in this segment and develop the business plan, forecasts, competition study, marketing plan, etc.
Initially I thought that this task was to hard for me/my experience and that I would never manage to come up with something remarkable. But, driven by the desire to get this job and to do something better for my career, I received an enthusiasm overdose and managed to see the light with my project. Presenting it was something very confusing – I didn’t know whether I was doing it right or not, I had cold feet and thought I was terrible. Everything was lightning fast (at least that’s how i felt it) and only after a couple of hours, a text message from my current boss cleared out the fog from my head – “it was excellent!”. I managed to sell myself, and I did it good.
So – important moment – high enthusiasm – over achieve – performance & success. What about the daily tasks, the moments that don’t seem that important? How do we keep up the enthusiasm? How do you stay driven everyday? How do you manage to be motivated in daily repetitive tasks and dealing with difficult clients? Always seeing the big picture? Enjoying every single thing that you do?
This guy certainty knows how to sell himself, how to make all those bad things from his past work in his advantage:

Fun has begun on the market – HTTPool & Yahoo.ro
May 15th
HTTPool enters Romanian market as a full service online advertising network, following the market trends by bringing a combined approach to the Online Industry – full service agency & online advertising network. You can read the full story on Hotnews and a more detailed analysis on Doru Panaitescu’s blog. I met HTTPool’s CEO, Timotej, in Warsaw at the InternetCEE conference last november and he is a fun guy with a sound business focus and clear regional markets understanding. I was impressed that such a young guy can lead such a big operation, but I guess this is the way in the Online Industry. It’s funny that neither of the sources that bring us the news mention anything about Timotej.
Timotej Gala, Chief Executive at Httpool Internet Marketing Central and Eastern Europe (Balkan).
Timotej Gala is responsible for media-buying and Internet advertising operations in five CEE markets. Since 2003, when he joined the company, he has successfully positioned Httpool as the market leader in online marketing in South-East Europe. Furthermore, he actively promotes Internet marketing in the region presenting the latest trends and opportunities of online marketing through media and marketing events.
The other news comes from Bobby Voicu – romanian blogger & online evangelist – recently appointed Yahoo Romania Community Manager. Bobby had a very important guest on his online RadioLynx show – Darren Patterson, Yahoo Business Development Director for Emerging Markets, who announced Yahoo’s strategy for 2008&2009 in Romania. Apparently www.yahoo.ro will be online with localized content this fall (august-september). You can see the full story on ZF.
Also, Yahoo! Messenger, no1 social “network” in Romania (if you ask me), will have a localized (translated) version.
This will definitely be a fun year for the Online Industry in Romania
Later edit: quite a coincidence, Orlando posted a write-up about the same 2 events I mentioned above. Check the timestamps
Later edit 2: You can listen to the recording of Bobby Voicu interviewing Darren Patterson
New website for Orange Romania
Jan 24th
Orange Romania have silently relaunched their website today. I am guessing they are debugging and making sure everything works before the official press release as I am not able to find any official information about their face lifted website.
WebShop and WebCare applications have maintained the old look & feel and probably they will get revamped in phase 2.
I personally find the content very crowded and I’ve also noticed some bad CSS usage but the improvements are clearly noticeable and they brush some of the dust from that old website.
Romanian 2008 forecast on media market (TV and Online) by Deloitte
Jan 22nd
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu has recently announced the 2008 forecast for the media market in Romania, covering both Online and TV. In short, they estimated a 50% increase in online advertising which brings the market up to aprox. 15 million euros. This is also estimated based on the 2007 figure which most industry people agreed that is around 10 million euros.
Some other facts from the press release tell us that the online advertising market is around 3% of the total advertising market, which is a pretty significant percent, considering other figures from CEE. They also speculate that by the end of 2008, Romanians will have access to IPTV service. The full press release is available in Romanian here: Deloitte analizează evoluţia industriei media în 2008 [PDF, 230k]
I only wish one could easily find similar figures for other countries.

Google Talk translation bots
Jan 11th
Google Talk has a cool new feature – translation bots – you can add them to your contact list and then just chat with them in your native language and they will reply back almost instantly with a pretty close translation (in the language of your chosen bot) of what you wrote. You can see a simple test on the right. The translation is not 100% accurate but hey …it’s pretty good!
So, if you want a translation buddy that will help you instantly with communication gaps between english and german speakers, just add en2de@bot.talk.google.com to your contact list in Google Talk. Currently there are 24 translation bots: ar2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, en2zh, es2en, fr2de, fr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, zh2en. Don’t forget to add the @bot.talk.google.com part at the end.
The really use of this feature will be handy also on you blackberry, if you use the Google Talk client for BlackBerry. With this you can transform you blackberry into a mobile translator!
For more information, there is a post about this feature on the Google Talk Blog.
Internet CEE and insomnia
Nov 19th
It’s 1:45AM and I cannot sleep. At 6AM my flight for Warsaw, Poland leaves. I am attending Internet CEE, the first international conference on the Interned industry in Central and Eastern Europe. Considering that I must leave my house at 4:00 AM, I am thinking there is no point in trying to get some sleep as I have troubles getting up in 1h. I’ll just switch from Heineken to Red Bull, take my shower, and catch some sleep in the plane, that is if the wind/cold/fog will not prevent it from taking off.
Last time I was on a plane (September 07) I was just after catching a terrible cold in Oslo, a cold that brought back the sinusitis I suffered from in my teen years. That cold, together with my sinuses vulnerability and combined with the high altitude (I was in the plane) gave me the most incredible head/nose/face aches. I hope not to get those pains today.
I am very excited to participate at Internet CEE and I hope I will come back with some useful information and a good grasp of international trends in the Internet industry. Also, I will try to do some live blogging from the conference, so if the topic interests you, stay tuned Tuesday and Wednesday. Also, never been to Warsaw before and I am looking forward in take some nice photos of the old town and having a local beer or two.
Synced my iPod and BlackBerry, charged my camera batteries and packed my luggage. What else to do?
Going to Internet CEE

See ya there? I’ll try to do some live blogging from Warsaw, so stay tuned…
what business smarphone would you choose?
Nov 8th
I am looking at some options and I would like to know your opinion. What device from the 3 below, would you prefer ?
I’ve been a Nokia user since ages and the switch is not easy – but I need something to better organize my time, something with high speed internet, eventually touchscreen, something fast (good hardware, easy to use, qwerty keyboard – i hate writing text on numeric keyboard). GPS would be very helpfull and also nice, stable software for instant messaging (gTalk and Yahoo! Messenger), etc. For the moment, I’ve got in testing a HTC TyTN II – seems pretty cool, but Windows Mobile (even 6.0) is not that great. I would love to try out the others.
What would you choose?
Later edit: I got the BB8800 !
I just could not cope with the idea to have windows on my phone as well .
